Make the Most of Warehouse Shopping

datePosted on 10:41, December 14th, 2009 by Small Town Mommy

I know it has been a while since I have done a review, but I am very particular about what I am willing to review.  It really limits my options (although I am getting much better at saying, no or ignoring those emails for things that don’t appeal).

Recently, I was contacted by My Blog Spark from General Mills and asked if I wanted to check out BJ’s Wholesale Club.  Now I love shopping and I especially love wholesale clubs.  I was a member of Costco for years, but had to end my membership as part of my cost-cutting (I tend to overspend when I visit wholesale clubs.  How can you pass up giant boxes of granola bars).

General Mills and BJ’s gave me a 2-month membership and a gift card for $25.  Unfortunately, I spent much more than the $25 but I was able to get a number of Christmas presents so it wasn’t a total mess (although I could have probably lived without the new sheets, but they are so soft and I now have enough toothbrushes to last me for quite a while).

Now BJ’s is not that close to the Small Town, but I prefer it to Costco.  I can’t really tell you why, it might be that it is a little smaller or that they have more variety.  I just know I prefer to shop there.  Since everyone loves warehouse shopping, I don’t need to tell you how much fun I had.  Instead, I am going to offer you a few tips to make your shopping experience brighter.

Know Your Prices: It is helpful if you know your prices before going to BJ’s.  Some of the stuff they have is really inexpensive while other items can be purchased cheaper when on sale at a grocery store.

Use the Discount Offers: BJ’s sent me a BJ’s Journal.  Make sure you use it.  I didn’t plan things as carefully as organized shoppers, so I was going through the Journal while I was ringing up my purchases (did I mention that they have a self-check-out aisle?  I love self-check out).  I saved about $25 using the coupons that came in the booklet.  Since these were items that I had already decided to purchase, I consider it free money (and it almost paid for my new sheets).  I believe BJ’s sends the Journal to all members.  In addition, BJ’s offers additional discount coupons on its Web site.  If you have coupons, nearly everything is less expensive at BJ’s than the grocery store.

Don’t Lose Control: It is very difficult to resist the giant jar of pickled anchovies, but if your family doesn’t eat them, you are unlikely to use them.  No matter how inexpensive stuff is, if your family won’t eat it, you are still wasting money.  Things that don’t spoil are fabulous.  You can never have too much toilet paper, paper towels or toothbrushes (have I mentioned, I love toothbrushes?).

Be Careful with Perishables: The corollary to the above statement is don’t buy too much of perishable items.  My family uses a ton of Pillsbury products (pie crust, cinnamon rolls, crescent rolls, etc.) so I stocked up.  Make sure you check the expiration dates and that you will be able to use the items before they expire (I have used all of my Pillsbury products already and now need to buy more).

Because my experience at BJ’s was so fabulous, I want to share it with you.  I am giving away a two-month membership and a $25 gift card to BJ’s (OK, it is really BJ’s and General Mills that is offering it, but I could be all greedy and selfish and keep it for myself).  All you have to do is leave me a comment below to tell me what you would like to purchase from BJ’s (did I mention that my sheets were really, really, soft).  That is all you need to do to enter.  In addition, you can get a second entry by subscribing to Small Town Mommy by email (if you already subscribe, it counts).  You can get an additional entry by following me on Twitter (if you already follow me, it counts).  You can win 5 entries by blogging about it and linking to this post (you have to actually blog about it, not just publish a link).  You know what, if your blog post makes me laugh out loud or entertains me, I will give you ten entries (yes, I reward those who entertain me, so shoot me).

Leave me a separate comment for each entry (if you blog about it, you only need to leave 1 comment, I can do the math).  You must leave the comment about what you want to buy (you can also mention that you are jealous of my extremely soft sheets).  Since BJ’s are only in the US, you must be a US resident to enter (I really love Canadians, maybe I will get more Canadian giveaways when I move there to access affordable health care).   The giveaway will be open until the end of Thursday, December 17th (that’s east coast time).  So enter away…

Stopping by through Entrecard and happy I did! I love BJ’s. I just keep signing up for the “free” 60 day trial memberships a couple of times a year so I don’t pay the $45 annual membership dues.

We love to buy their produce, especially the berries. The prices on these are great.

Also, I am jealous of your soft sheets!

Small Town Daddy, you are not able to enter. That wouldn’t be fair. Besides, BJ’s doesn’t have Take 5 bars.

It’s been so long since I had a membership to BJ’s! I used to love getting the giant boxes of Pop Tarts, though. And not sharing!

We love BJ’s. There is one about 5 minutes from my house and guess what? Our membership is expiring at the end of the month. So 2 more months would be awesome. If I won I would buy a ginormous can of know like Kramer in Seinfeld bought and fed to the horse???

Seriously, I would use it at their gas pumps because my SUV is very thirsty!

I already follow you on Twitter!

Ha Ha, good thing I homeschool my kids, I didn’t even read the directions right. You clearly said to leave a comment, for each entry, I only left one with them all lumped together. Oh well I came to get the link for my blog post, so I am leaving a comment about that LOL.

I blogged about it on our WTHW. I’ve been thinking that if I won I would use it for myself and let my husband buy my gas. That sounds better to me.
